Serve
as a “Book Buddy” mentor/tutor to students of any age (including
adults) or learning level (including developmentally disabled). |
| & |
Help
immigrant students learn English. Talk to your school counselor about
how you can set a program up in your school or another local
school. This could be a really fun project! |
| & |
Read
to the elderly or someone who is sight-impaired. Call a local
senior center or retirement
community for people who could use this service. |
| & |
Teach
senior citizens to use the Internet. Contact a local
senior center for more info. |
| & |
Help
parents and students learn how to effectively use their local library.
Call your local library to
coordinate a program. |
| & |
Write
children’s books to donate (and read to) younger students. |
| & |
Collect
books for a homeless shelter. The Hannah
More Women's Shelter is a local shelter you can work with. |
| & |
Provide
school supplies for disadvantaged students. Believe it or not, some kids
at your school probably can't afford all of the school supplies they
need throughout the year. Many times teachers end up spending their own
money to provide supplies for these students. Ask to attend the next
faculty meeting and find out if your school needs donations. |
| & |
Promote
service-learning activities through articles in the school or community
papers. |
| & |
Use
theatre and poetry in advocacy projects. Write a play about reading,
tolerance, volunteering, etc. and
then perform it for kids at local
library or school. |
