Protect Your PC From Virus ThreatsCourtesy of Barbara Stanislawski Virus protection is an ongoing necessity but recently there have been elevated threats. One is the Beagle/Bagle Worm. It hides inside an executable file (an *.exe file) attached to an email. W32/Bagle-mm searches the infected machine for email addresses and then uses its own SMTP engine to send itself to the addresses found. This email appears to be harmless, because its sender is usually someone you know, and the subject of the email contains a short message like "Hi" or "Hello." The Bagel-A worm harvests email addresses from the computers it infects, and then sends itself to all of those addresses except Hotmail, MSN, Microsoft, or AVP addresses. The author is attempting to “spoof” the user into trusting the message sender. While many email programs like Outlook Express and Outlook have warnings or safeguards preventing you from opening the attachment from within the program, if you save the file to your hard drive and open it the you can still infect your system and many others. Listed below are two free virus protection programs that I currently use. If you are having problems and are unable to download and install these programs go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and you can scan your system. Remember…simply having virus scanning software does not mean you are protected. You must download virus definition updates from the software vendor for every computer in your home or office to make sure you are protected. Several vendor web sites are listed below to help you find the updates for your software. Take care and happy computing! Free Virus Protection Programs: Retail Virus Protection Programs:
